We are excited to highlight Vanessa Good, we connected more with Vanessa to learn what Hispanic Heritage month means to her! See her answers below.
Meet Vanessa:
“Born in Mexico and inspired by my parents to be ambitious in everything I do! I’ve lived in Washington for most of my life and consider it a second home (go Dawgs!). In my free time I run a baking blog that supports POC and education-focused nonprofits via online bake sales. I also love kickboxing, as well as developing my creative side through music and photography.”
What does Hispanic heritage month mean to you?
“Hispanic and Latino heritage includes so many different cultures, ideas, and appreciations of life. By highlighting and celebrating these very diverse cultures under one inclusive wing, we have the opportunity to share a bit of history that makes the United States the community it truly is. In addition to the celebration of Hispanic heritage, the month of September has always carried a special significance in our family – marking our move from Mexico to the United States in 1998. A happy coincidence!”
Are there any specific events or traditions that are important to you during this time?
“Mexican Independence Day (September 16th) is the most notable!”
How can the community celebrate and bring awareness to Hispanic heritage month?
“Beyond Hispanic Heritage Month, there should always be an emphasis on inclusivity — from hiring, to day-to-day discussions. I, myself would love to be part of a diversity board that priorities creating a welcoming environment for all minorities.”
