Since 1976, Black History Month has been designated to remember the contributions of people of the African diaspora. This year as we celebrate Black History Month, you will see highlights on our social media that will feature some of our employees and we’ll share opportunities to support Black-owned businesses.
As an organization, making sure you acknowledge and find ways to celebrate diversity holidays year-round is a simple but impactful way to promote diversity and inclusion. Also, supporting Black employees during Black History Month involves recognizing and celebrating their contributions, fostering an inclusive environment, and promoting ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts.
Here’s how you can celebrate and bring awareness to Black History Month beyond just this month:
Celebrate the stories of black employees within your organization. Give employees the opportunity to share something unique about their heritage and highlight on social media, in newsletters or during team meetings.
Last year during Black History Month our Director of Diversity and Inclusion, LaToya Benson, shared her story and pride in her culture on our blog and social media
Provide educational resources about black history and culture. This can include documentaries, books, articles, or hosting events with guest speakers.
Encourage employees to educate themselves and engage in conversations about the history and experiences of black individuals. Furthermore, in 2022, several of our employees came together to read and discuss the 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah – Jones. We were able to have a robust discussion on race, politics, and the pieces of American history that were never fully represented in our educational upbringing.
Foster an inclusive work environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Encourage open conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Survey your employees to get a pulse on feedback and current engagement levels. Additionally, encourage leadership to actively listen to concerns and take action to address issues raised. Feedback received from these surveys can help you create a program and set goals.
Previously, in 2020, JeffreyM initiated our yearly employee engagement survey to assess representation, inclusiveness, and overall satisfaction. The findings inform leadership and staff, prompting adjustments and improvements to our initiatives.
Support community initiatives and organizations that focus on the empowerment and well-being of the black community. Consider organizing or participating in volunteer activities that contribute to the betterment of the Black community.
You can also make supporting black owned businesses part of your everyday work life. Consider finding a black owned restaurant to cater your next staff meeting. Or next time you are sending out a corporate or employee appreciation gift consider black owned products.
At JeffreyM we are dedicated to continuing to support the Black community, celebrating the rich culture and achievements and working towards racial equity beyond just a month.
